2009 – France, Rennes – SNCF, Cerland, Peugeot Citroën

Departure day

On August 29, 2009 at 10 oclock in the morning we started our trip from Vcklabruck to Munich and from there we flew to Paris. Straight from there we took the TGV to get to Rennes, where we arrived at 21:30 and were welcomed by Mr Philippe Auzou and Mr Michel Feuerle. After a quick snack we were brought to the youth hostel St. Joseph de Previle which was our home for the next 4 weeks.

The following Sunday we were shown the way to our workplaces and we had time to get used to the new surroundings. In the evening we were invited for barbecue at Michels place.

Work

On Monday, August 31, we started with our internship in the different companies:

  • Bastian Ludwig with SNCF
  • Florian Grstlinger with Cerland
  • Lukas Kail with Peugeot Citron
SNCF

I worked with SNCF, the french train company. The department, where I worked was restoring old trains. When the 20 to 30 years old trains arrived they were at first stripped down and afterwords old-but-good pieces an dnew ones were put in again. My job was to update drawings if there were some new pieces and if there was a problem i had to go to the train and find a solution. A big advantage of working an a railwiy station is that your working place is located very centrally and so I could use my breaks to go sight-seeing.

Cerland

My work as a trainee with Cerland in Bruz started on August 31 at 8:30 in the morning. Because I was the first foreign trainee at this company it was not only for me a new challenge.

On the first day I was introduced to my contact person for the following month, Mr. Pascal Hincourt. I was also welcomed by the other staff in a very nice way and so the first problems disappeared immediately.

Mostly, my working days were very relaxing and started every morning at at 8 oclock and ended at half past 4. Lunch was from 12 to 13:30. My main task was the measuring and drawing with Solid Works of already made products. Because of the fact that this program was totally new for me the first time was a bit hard but after a few days my job increasingly became funny. Due to the funny character of my colleagues my working time never got boring.

PSA Peugeot Citron

Everyone knows the automobile manufactoring companies Peugeot and Citroen, butproduction methods in France are not common to a lot of people. Due to my stay in France, wich lasted 4 weeks, I gained some insight in the labour market in France and also in the countrys culture and its way of life.

On Monday 31st August I was taken to my workplace for the first time by my adviser Philippe Auzou und got introduced to my boss Jean-Charles Wadoux, who gave me good advice for the challenges at PSA und suggested a lot of leisure activities.

My working time was from about eight oclock a.m. to four oclock p.m. During this time there was a short break in the morning and a lunch break, where I had the possibility to have lunch with my collegues. In France people have to workthe whole afternoon also on Fridays, whereas Mr Wadoux sometimes allowed me to leave my workingplace at noon from time to time.

In those 4 weeks or 25 days occurred various situations, where I was able to apply my abilities acquired in school and upgrade my constructive knowledge. And because of the fact, that PSA introduced the new 3-D CAD software CATIA, which I know very well, I could explain the most important basics to my collegues. At first it was a little bit difficult, due to the linguistical differences but after I had overcome a few challenges and had got rid of my anxiety (that I wont understand anything) this problem also disappeard.

To sum up, it was a wonderful experience for us and wed like to send all good wishes to the pupils, who will have this opportunity in the following years.

Day trips

St. Malo

On 5th September our first trip led us to St. Malo a picturesome seaport which is very popular for its huge city wall and the enormous tide difference in tide of up to 8 metres. There we visited the beautiful Old Town and enjoyed the shows of the different artists.

Le Mount St. Michelle

A week later we visited Le Mont St. Michel which is about a two hours drive away from Rennes. The view on the huge castle and the many visitors was really impressing.Despite the huge amount of tourists a short trip to this ancient place is really recommendable.

Football fever

Due to the perfect location of our hostel it took us just 10 minutes to get to the soccer stadium of FC Rennes, which holds more than 30000 people. Because of the cheap ticket prices we took the chance to watch two matches.

Return

On 25th september we had our last working day and the following Saturday we left Rennes at 9 oclock in the morning. When we arrived in Paris we took the plane to Munich and landed there at 7 oclock in the evening.
